Ciao ciao everyone! It’s Wednesday and Lauren and I are headed to Italy!!!! Can you tell I’m excited?! But before Italy, there was Montserrat Monastery on Sunday. Montserrat Monastery is situated in the gorgeous mountainside of Montserrat.
Montserrat Monastery was well worth the hour drive to get to it. The monastery was built on the Montserrat mountain because of the Black Madonna that was found here.
These mountains are unlike the surrounding mountains because they were formed when the two plates collided millions of years ago, forming the mountain range. However; the Catalonian story is angles took a sword to the land and created the mountains.
Pilgrims travel from all over the world to come and see the Black Madonna. She is said to have healing powers and people come to touch her hand. Lauren and I could have gone up to the statue itself to see it, but the wait was over two hours and we wanted to explore the area.
The church itself was beautiful in it’s Gothic style. Unfortunately the church had to be rebuilt because when Napoleon invaded Spain, he destroyed everything in his path, which included the church.
When our tour was complete, we hiked the path to Saint Michael’s cross which offers amazing views of the surrounding area, as well as the monastery. Thank goodness the day was not unbearably hot as it has been, otherwise, I don’t know if I would have made the hike. I wore lightweight pants because I knew we were going into a church and we were told to dress accordingly. Wearing pants and hiking in the heat would not have made a good combination. I have always wanted to go hiking but just never got around to it. I definitely was not doing it this day, wearing these clothes.
But, back to the views and the monastery. They were just breathtaking. Seeing all the hills and valleys gives you an appreciation for the beauty of nature. Many of the locals come here on the weekends to hike the various trails.
If anyone is visiting Barcelona, I highly recommend making this one of your stops. Lauren and I booked our tour through Viator and it could not have been easier. This isn’t my first trip using them and I haven’t been disappointed yet. If you are traveling anywhere, check out the tours that are in the area!
I hope you are all having a great week! Only two more days and it’s Friday!!
As always, thanks for stopping by!
